In 1879, the Real de Asúa brothers arrived in Haro to embark on what would become one of the longest-standing histories in the wine world. A trip initially taken for health reasons led to the creation of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (C.V.N.E.) in the iconic Barrio de la Estación railway station. The first wine produced by CVNE was named after its initials. A simple orthographic mistake where the V was written as U resulted in the creation of the Cune brand.

Cune Crianza has been produced every year since the company was founded.

The vineyards for Cune Crianza are located in Rioja Alta, near the CVNE winery, which means that the grapes arrive intact at the winery to be processed in optimal conditions. Approximately half of the grapes are from the vineyards in Haro and nearby towns, while the rest are bought from grape growers in the area.

Cune Blanco is made with a selection of the best Viura vines from the sub-areas of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, which combine ideal characteristics for growing vines. The wine’s complexity stems from the diversity of altitudes, exposures and soil types found across these vineyards.
Finca La Emperatriz is a winery with an extensive vineyard estate in Rioja Alta.
Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz is the new project of brothers Eduardo and Víctor, who in 1996 acquired Bodega La Emperatriz, named as such because the first owner of these plots was Eugenia de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III and Empress of France. With this new emphasis and with new projects at hand, the winery changed its name but its high-end wines retain the Finca La Emperatriz signature, the name of the ‘viñedo singular’ they come from, which is given to small, old plots with limited but high quality production and which, in summary, must comply with a series of strict standards to prove their quality. The grapes used to make El Jardín de la Emperatriz Tinto come from plots where the soils are mostly composed of white boulders over a sandy-loam structure and where the vines have an average age of 25 years old.

Las Cenizas is the winery’s village wine that takes its name from one of the most important towns in the Rioja DOCa: Cenicero, in the heart of Rioja Alta, - where the Hernáiz brothers - and whose name is believed to be due to the bonfires that the primitive shepherds left as they passed through the area. A historic town known for its vineyards and the quality of its wines.

Muriel Wines was created as a family business with strong links to its place of origin. Today, it has become a large global company with an important part of its business dedicated to exports. But it remains very connected to its roots: one foot in the vineyard and the other in the rest of the world.

Made from vineyards in the heart of Rioja Alavesa and select areas of Rioja Alta, these old vines are cultivated using the traditional goblet-training system. Giving the greatest prominence to the DOCa Rioja’s star variety and following the traditional guidelines that have made it so well known, Muriel Gran Reserva Viña Viejas is a classic to enjoy the expertise of this community that is so attached to their land.

In Baños de Rioja, Viura is trained in espalier. The vineyards of Fuenmayor and Cenicero are not located in an area as extreme as those of Baños de Rioja, the microclimate is less Atlantic and the wines do not require of a long aging to show their full potential.

This wine is made exclusively from Tempranillo grapes, mostly grown on bush vines of over 30 years old. Although all the grapes come from Rioja Alta vineyards, they come from climate areas which are less extreme than the family’s best-known vineyard, “La Emperatriz”. Less Atlantic influence means that the wines do not require such a long ageing.

Muriel Wines was created as a family business with strong links to its place of origin. Today, it has become a large global company with an important part of its business dedicated to exports. But it remains very connected to its roots: one foot in the vineyard and the other in the rest of the world.

This gran reserva is a true Rioja classic. With great aromatic complexity and a smooth and unctuous mouthfeel, it comes from the old Tempranillo vineyards that Muriel owns in the town of Elciego. Perfected after a long and careful aging of 24 months in oak barrels.

With this new emphasis and with new projects at hand, the winery changed its name but its high-end wines retain the Finca La Emperatriz signature, the name of the ‘viñedo singular’ they come from.

Until the end of 2019, the range of wines under the “Finca La Emperatriz” label included nine wines made with grapes from different vineyards of the same name, and when the grapes from a harvest ran out, the wine was no longer available. These wines have been replaced by this new selection with the Finca La Emperatriz Viñedo Singular Tinto taking the place of the Finca La Emperatriz Crianza and Reserva wines.

From 2019, the D.O.Ca. Rioja established a new geographical indication classification system that seeks to value the terroir as a recognition of the quality it brings to the wine. This means there are three new classifications: Viñedo Singular, Vinos de Municipio and Vinos de Zona.

Finca La Emperatriz Viñedo Singular Tinto is made with clusters from old vines aged between 50 and 65 years old from the Finca La Emperatriz vineyard, which has white boulder soils over a sandy-loam structure. These characteristics are perfect for vine cultivation and add an elegant touch to the wines.

Since January 2020, the range of Classic Blends and Single Plot wines have disappeared, giving way to four new labels: a high-end red and white called “Finca la Emperatriz Gran Vino”, a blend of traditional Rioja varieties from a “viñedo singular”, a pure expression of terroir, like the great chateaux of Bordeaux; and their respective younger brothers also from the same estate, called El Jardín de la Emperatriz.
