The Legend of La Fiole dates back to 1952 after a meeting between a winemaker from Châteauneuf du Pape and a renowned glass artist from the region. Together they imagined a bottle with curved shapes, reminiscent of the vines of old Grenache vines bent by the Mistral wind. Much more than a simple bottle, it became the ideal bottle for a great Châteauneuf du Pape wine.

The terroirs are highly diverse, with Grenache primarily sourced from the north and central areas of the Vaucluse department, while Syrah comes from the northern part of the Gard department.

The soils and microclimates from which this wine originates vary significantly, with each plot planted with the grape variety best suited to its conditions. Grenache, which makes up about 60% of the blend, thrives on hillsides with good southeast exposure and is planted in sandy-clay, clay-limestone and silty clay soils often covered with pebbles or gravel, as well as deep red clay. Pebbly soils impart concentration, clay-limestone adds power and depth, while sandy soils bring finesse to the blend.

Syrah (around 30%) grows mainly on clay and sand at the foot of the slopes, contributing to a balance of freshness and finesse. Depending on the vintage, the blend may also include up to 10% of complementary grape varieties such as Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Counoise.

Fiole Réserve is classified as a Côtes du Rhône Villages, though its quality is on par with that of a Côtes du Rhône Villages with village name. However, since it is made from grapes sourced from several villages, such as Laudun, Valréas, Rochegude, Vinsobres, and Cairanne, it cannot be classified within this specific AOC segment.

This wine comes from various soil types, with each plot planted to match the grape varieties best suited to those soils. Grenache, which makes up about 70% of the blend, thrives on sandy-clay soils on hillsides with good south-southeast exposure.

The vines for La Fiole Côtes-du-Rhône white are located in the Gard department. This wine is sourced from vines planted in two distinct soil types of varieties suited to their specific terroirs. Grenache Blanc, which makes up about 60% of the blend, thrives on the sandy-clay soils at the foot of south-facing slopes. This produces a wine that is concentrated and well-structured, with fresh aromas and bright acidity, providing a solid base for blending with Clairette. Clairette (around 40%) is grown primarily on silty clay at the foot of the slopes. The cooler soils and slightly more humid microclimate result in fresher, more floral and citrus aromas, along with lively notes on the palate. This adds freshness and lift to the blend, creating wines with nice fat, fullness and suppleness on the palate and a lovely, long finish.

The story began with Michel Chapoutier, a unique man with a thirst for knowledge, definitely one of a kind. He seeks to discover and reflect the full potential of his terroirs and let the soils express their true character.
This now forms the basis of the M. CHAPOUTIER ethos to reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer.

This domain held a twin appeal for M. CHAPOUTIER: a vineyard already converted to organic in Montfrin in Gard county, and a section in Costières de Nîmes, where the company did not yet own vineyards. The first visit to this beautifully-maintained vineyard was promising, and in 2018, a range of appellations – Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Costières de Nîmes and Pays d’Oc – have been produced.

The vineyard plots are located in the commune of Montfrin. This wine comes from a soil composed of deep red clay and siliceous pebbles of various sizes brought by the sea some several million years ago.
