In 1879, the Real de Asúa brothers arrived in Haro to embark on what would become one of the longest-standing histories in the wine world. A trip initially taken for health reasons led to the creation of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (C.V.N.E.) in the iconic Barrio de la Estación railway station. The first wine produced by CVNE was named after its initials. A simple orthographic mistake where the V was written as U resulted in the creation of the Cune brand.

Cune Blanco is made with a selection of the best Viura vines from the sub-areas of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, which combine ideal characteristics for growing vines. The wine’s complexity stems from the diversity of altitudes, exposures and soil types found across these vineyards. A shared guiding principle is the pursuit of freshness and balance, which defines the identity of the wine.

The Taurasi vineyards are situated at between 500 and 700 meters above sea level, and are always subject to a cool breeze that blows off the Bay of Naples. This same breeze has, over centuries, blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland to give the soil here a poor, volcanic character. Fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards of over 40 years old able to give the best expression of Taurasi.

Thanks to a particularly favorable microclimate and an extraordinary soil condition, the agronomists have carried out painstaking work in selecting the best vineyards. Modern technological processes and careful oenological knowledge allow to now make wines that embody the best reinterpretation of millennia of wine tradition enclosed under the name of Lava.

In the Vulture area, the climate is continental with cold, rainy winters and summers cooled by the Balkan breezes. Here the climatic conditions and high altitude create an incredible temperature range that, together with the volcanic soils, rich in potassium and minerals, give the wines freshness, flavour and a unique character.

The Vigneti del Vulture winery is in the small town of Acerenza, a vast area dominated by the austere profile of Monte Vulture, a volcano, no longer active, that, with its eruptions has contaminated the soil of an extraordinary minerality. The vineyards are longer living than the average, robust and resistant to drought and are able to transfer a unique character to the wine. The vines have struggled for millennia to adapt to this ground and in fact, even today, varieties such as Aglianico and Greco have shown that in these extreme conditions they can produce fruit of an unbeatable quality and extraordinary personality.

In the Sava area, the climate is typically Mediterranean with long, hot summers, but constantly influenced by sea breezes from two seas, which cool the vineyards. Here the area is predominantly flat and characterized by brick-red soils rich in iron oxides from the underlying limestone that give our wines great aromatic complexity.

In Cantina Sava have selected the oldest primitivo saplings and, bunch by bunch, all our grapes are handpicked and brought intact and healthy to the cellar; where they are then handed over to expert winemakers, in charge of the scrupulous vinification and aging and prepare it for a long bottle life. The strength of these wines comes from the ability to dose the three main ingredients of the Salento wine tradition: Sun, sea and passion.

TECHNICAL DATA
Alcohol 14%

APPEARANCE
A dark ruby core accompanied by delicate, bright purple flashes along the glass rim.

NOSE
Focused on small black-skinned fruits, it bursts with intense aromas of blackcurrant, wild blackberries, and a heavy dose of Mediterranean spices (thyme & rosemary).

PALATE
Medium-to-full body with a velvety and perfectly balanced texture. It provides a nice contrast between a warming alcoholic sensation and a mouth-cleansing freshness.

AGEING
The wine is aged for 4 to 5 months in used French and American oak barriques.

PAIRING
Outstanding when paired with lasagna, baked ravioli, pasta with wild boar or spicy fennel sausage. At its best also with grilled pork chops, lamb and medium-aged cheeses.

Alcohol 14.5%

APPEARANCE
Intense ruby color with violet reflections.

NOSE
An aromatic bouquet loaded with ripe raspberries, dark plums, black fruits, and Mediterranean spices, backed by subtle undercurrents of smoky tobacco, cedar wood and dark cocoa.

PALATE
A full-bodied wine, round and incredibly smooth. It leans into a soft, velvety texture where the high sugar concentration masks very well the alcohol heat.

AGEING
Maceration at controlled temperature for 8-10 days with regular pumping overs.

PAIRING
It goes well with savory cold cuts, grilled red meat, game, smoked and herbed cheese. But also with savory seafood dishes, such as swordfish with rosemary.
